Through the Portal: A Science Fiction Writing Prompt

The Writing Prompt:

In the year 2125, humanity has mastered space travel, and the first interdimensional portal has been opened. The goal is to explore alternate realities, but what they find in these parallel worlds is beyond their wildest expectations.

A team of explorers is chosen for a risky mission—to enter a newly discovered dimension and gather information on its environment. The team is equipped with advanced technology, including AI assistants and drones, to ensure their safety. However, the moment they step through the portal, they realize something is terribly wrong.

The world they enter is not like anything they’ve studied in theory. Time runs differently here; what feels like days in their new world is mere hours in their original dimension. The air is thick with strange particles that affect their thoughts and memories, making it harder to distinguish what is real. The planet’s surface is barren, but there are signs of an ancient, advanced civilization—artifacts and structures suggesting a long-forgotten species once thrived here.

As they explore deeper, they begin to notice that they’re not alone. Strange creatures, seemingly out of time and place, follow them, observing their every move. The team’s AI systems begin malfunctioning, and they are faced with the realization that they might be trapped in this reality forever. The deeper they go, the more they question whether they’re truly exploring a parallel dimension or if they’ve somehow crossed into something far more dangerous—an alternate version of their own reality, where nothing is what it seems.

Now, the explorers must figure out how to survive and find a way back to their own dimension before it’s too late. But with their memories fading and their technology failing, their biggest question remains: Is this world a dream, a trap, or something even worse?

Tips for Writing This Prompt:

  1. Build a Futuristic, Yet Tangible World:
When crafting your new dimension, blend futuristic technology with elements of mystery. Think of advanced tech that feels both familiar and strange, creating a world that challenges the characters while pushing the limits of their understanding.
  2. Introduce Mind-Bending Concepts:
Play with the idea of time and reality. How does the alternate world affect the team’s perception of time, memory, or identity? The concept of alternate dimensions offers endless possibilities for strange rules that break the laws of physics, so don’t be afraid to explore the weird and wonderful.
  3. Character Development in the Face of the Unknown:
Your characters should change throughout their journey. Faced with extreme isolation and a reality that defies their comprehension, explore how they cope. Do they become paranoid, lose trust in each other, or question the very nature of their existence?
  4. Create Intriguing, Unnerving Creatures:
The strange beings or creatures that the team encounters can become key to the mystery. Perhaps they are silent observers, or maybe they communicate in an eerie way. How do these beings fit into the story? Are they part of a larger, unspoken agenda?
  5. Emphasize Psychological Tension:
With the explorers’ memories failing and their perception of reality skewed, psychological tension becomes a driving force. Play with the idea of paranoia, trust, and the fear of losing one’s grip on reality. It’s not just the environment that’s dangerous—it’s the unraveling of their minds.
  6. Cliffhanger Ending:
Leave your readers on the edge of their seats. Whether it’s the discovery of something shocking about the nature of the world or a twist in the team’s struggle for survival, give your readers something to think about long after they’ve finished reading.
